Chapter 39: Burning the Boats
The two statues showed no reaction to the sudden appearance of reinforcements, as if they lacked any semblance of thought or emotion—mere puppets following a pre-programmed directive.
Grenades fired by three marauders exploded in brilliant bursts of light against the statue attacking Housen. The C-14 "Impaler" gauss rifles wielded by the marines unleashed supersonic 8mm metal spikes that clanged against its scales like hail on steel. Thanks to the atmospheric shield enveloping the area, breathable air allowed the grenades to create shockwaves upon detonation, slightly slowing the statue’s advance. Seizing the moment, Housen retreated to the rear, gasping for breath.
Sweat poured down his forehead, his face flushed crimson like overripe watermelon flesh. These things were far beyond anything humanity had ever created—stronger than even the most advanced combat robots developed by the Charles Federation at astronomical costs. They weren’t just superior; they were incomparable.
As Housen caught his breath, the statue moved again. Its form shimmered briefly before vanishing entirely, only to reappear an instant later directly in front of one of the continuously firing marauders. With a single swing of its glowing blade, it cleaved through the marauder's reinforced power armor—a suit capable of withstanding 20mm autocannon fire—and sent a heavily armored arm flying into the air.
Yet, despite the gushing fountain of blood erupting from the soldier’s shoulder, none of these neuro-modulated warriors faltered. Devoid of fear and pain, they pressed on relentlessly. Even reduced to one arm, the marauder continued firing grenades with mechanical precision, each explosion rippling across the statue’s surface.
The light blade descended once more, but this time, three zerglings flapped their underbelly wings and swarmed forward, latching onto the statue’s elbow. Their sharp claws gouged furiously at the impenetrable scales while disrupting the statue’s attack trajectory.
On the other side, five more zerglings clung to the second statue’s arm, gnawing and clawing with ferocious intensity. Behind them, the queens unleashed volley after volley of bone spines, each impact ringing out like shattering glass as the projectiles ricocheted harmlessly off the statue’s scaly hide. Like the gauss rifle rounds, the spines failed to penetrate.
Housen looked utterly dejected, his inner confusion causing him to overlook a crucial detail. The grenade explosions, the piercing of metal spikes, and the zerglings’ tearing bites—while none of these attacks had managed to penetrate the statue's scaly armor, they had weakened its overall protection. It was true that the bone spines from the Queens had been deflected, but if one were to observe closely, it would become apparent that every impact of the bone spines left a small crack on those palm-sized scales.
As these cracks grew larger and slowly intertwined into a spider-web pattern, Tang Fang took notice. It wasn’t that his eyesight was better than Arroz’s or Housen’s; rather, it was because the spine crawler behind him struck the statue attacking Arroz, shattering one of the scales into countless fragments.
"Huh?" Tang Fang’s pupils contracted as hope surged within him. These statues weren’t invincible. With enough force, their defenses could be breached.
Hum.
Just as Tang Fang ordered his units to focus all attacks on the exposed weak point, the statue seemed to react to the spine crawler’s armor-piercing blow. A violent pulse of energy erupted from its body, bathing the clinging zerglings in blinding blue light. The zerglings were violently repelled, crashing to the ground like ragdolls.
With an ear-splitting screech, the statue twisted its elbows and swung both blades upward, slicing cleanly through the zerglings. Blood sprayed everywhere as five of the creatures fell lifeless to the ground, their charred remains filling the air with acrid smoke.
“Ah!” Arroz screamed in fury, emptying his magazine into a single spot on the statue’s chest. With a sharp crack, the targeted scale shattered into pieces.
But Tang Fang didn’t rejoice. His gaze was fixed intently on several scales near the statue’s lower ribcage. During the creature’s retaliatory shockwave attack, he’d glimpsed something unusual through the queen’s unique vision—a dense, glowing orb of blue light nestled beneath the scales. That spot now became the focal point of his strategy.
“Tang Fang! What are you doing?!” Arroz’s shout snapped him back to reality. Looking up, he saw a reaper sliced cleanly in half by the statue’s blade, collapsing to the ground with a sickening thud.
“We can’t keep wasting time. This is our last chance!” Determination hardening his features, Tang Fang issued a decisive command to all remaining units: “Attack the area one foot below the statue’s ribs—at any cost.”
Receiving the order, the surviving units launched a relentless, suicidal assault. Fluids splattered everywhere, limbs flew, and zerglings fell in droves, their bodies reduced to smoking, charred husks. One marine was impaled by a light blade, yet even in death, he managed to squeeze off a final burst of gunfire, peppering the designated weak point with holes.
A queen lost an entire limb to the statue’s blade, leaving a jagged scar across her carapace. Another inch deeper, and she would have joined the fallen zerglings as a smoldering pile of meat. Yet, driven by instinct and loyalty to Tang Fang’s commands, she fought on undeterred, using her remaining limbs to continue the assault.
Crack! Crack!
Several hypersonic bone spines and razor-sharp appendages struck true, shattering two scales into countless shards. Simultaneously, five zerglings sacrificed themselves in a frenzied assault, breaking another scale free.
Seizing the opportunity, the spine crawler unleashed a massive spine, striking the newly exposed patch of flesh with pinpoint accuracy.
Crack! Crack! Crack!
The statue’s outer layer began to fracture, cracks spreading rapidly across its surface. But the victory came at a cost. In retaliation, the statue bathed the spine crawler in blue light, lifting it slowly into the air. Through their psychic link, Tang Fang heard the creature’s anguished cries as the light twisted and crushed its body, snapping its hooked legs and compressing its torso until it was nearly unrecognizable.
Judging by the situation, it would take only a few seconds for the mysterious force to obliterate the spine crawler entirely.
“Arroz, watch out!” Tang Fang shouted urgently to the man closest to the statue.
Though older, Arroz remained as formidable as ever. His expression hardened as he rolled forward, using the cover of fallen zergling corpses to leap onto the statue’s thick forearm. Swinging like a veteran gymnast, he vaulted onto the statue’s abdomen. Clenching his teeth, he pulled the safety cap off a high-explosive grenade with his teeth and slammed the detonator button. Pushing the explosive deep into the gaping hole in the statue’s side, he released his grip and dropped to the ground, rolling away just as the grenade detonated.
The sudden and swift scene left Tang Fang utterly dumbfounded. As unassuming as this old man usually was, quiet and reserved to the point where one’d think he wouldn’t make a peep even if one hit him with a stick, no one could have imagined that his skills would be so unbelievably impressive. The entire sequence of movements was executed with crisp precision, flowing as smoothly as running water and gliding clouds. It made Tang Fang wonder where he learned it from.
Boom!
The explosion erupted like a miniature sun, sending waves of fiery blue flames cascading outward from the wound in the statue’s abdomen. The hovering spine crawler plummeted to the ground, its health bar dropping perilously low—down to just 20 points. Had Arroz hesitated even a second longer, the creature would have been doomed.
Tang Fang quickly directed the queen to spray the injured spine crawler with nourishing fluid, watching as new muscle tissue knitted itself together and restored the creature’s vitality. As the red health bar shifted back to orange-yellow, Tang Fang exhaled deeply. As long as the queen and spine crawler survived, there was still hope.
Thud.
A low rumble shook the ground. Looking up, Tang Fang saw the first statue topple backward, smoke curling lazily from the massive cavity in its abdomen. Faint sparks of blue light drifted upward like embers.
“One down!” he muttered, suppressing his excitement.
Turning toward the second statue, however, his heart sank. What he saw froze him in place, draining all color from his face.
