Chapter 26: The Archimedes

"Huh?" Tang Fang was stunned, taking a moment to process what had happened. Shifting his focus, he noticed that the previously grayed-out and inactive Terran icon in the system interface had transformed into a shimmering dark gold.

With a thought, the Zerg base interface vanished, replaced by the Terran command center—and a single SCV (Space Construction Vehicle).
SCV

The Terran base had been unlocked—unexpectedly, at this very moment.

Instinctively, Tang Fang selected the SCV and opened the basic construction menu. Sure enough, apart from the Command Center, Supply Depot, and Refinery in the first row, the Barracks—the first building in the second row—had been unlocked.

Tang Fang was overjoyed, as if a sudden windfall of five million credits had blown his way. If Kraftmann hadn’t been present, he would have burst into laughter to vent his excitement. The availability of the terran base and the unlocking of the Barracks meant that he now had another ace up his sleeve. His combat units were becoming more diverse, his firepower stronger, and his tactics far more flexible.

With practiced ease, he pressed the hotkey "B," and the SCV began welding together the framework of a new structure. Tang Fang forced down his elation and shifted his focus to the central computer’s display screen. From the annotations beside the data, he learned that the classified information integrated by the system contained the construction techniques for the base, including infrastructure, life support, communication systems, and other integration data.

The technologies to build the base had unlocked the terran tech tree. Based on this, it seemed likely that other structures beyond the Barracks would also require the integration of existing classified technologies to unlock.

As Tang Fang furrowed his brow in thought, the compression and transfer of the data finally completed.

Seeing him staring blankly at the screen, Kraftmann called out, “What are you doing? Let’s go!”

“Oh,” Tang Fang snapped back to reality. He pulled the palm-sized micro-PDA from its port and tossed it to Kraftmann to store safely. Nodding to Arroz and the others, he turned and headed toward the door.

Thanks to the shared vision with his Zerglings, Tang Fang’s group escorted Kraftmann through the southern zone without incident. Passing through the connecting corridor, they once again arrived at the launch silo in the northern zone.

By the time Kraftmann had issued the retreat order, most of the non-combat personnel from the eastern zone had already boarded medium-sized shuttles and departed for outer space. As Tang Fang and his companions "protected" Kraftmann while entering the launch silo hall, the shuttle carrying logistics maintenance and kitchen staff was already ascending into the sky.

Sporadic gunfire echoed from the eastern zone. As the last Jeyun II-type shuttle prepared for launch, the security doors of the connecting corridor leading to the launch silo hall opened. Several soldiers in powered armor stumbled out, rushing toward the silo.

“One, two, three, four, five.”

Kraftmann’s gaze swept over the five surviving soldiers, his mouth bitter. A full company’s worth of troops had been wiped out by just thirty-some alien bugs. Once this news reached the upper echelons of the military, his days as a commander were surely over.

“Commander, there’s no time left. Get on the shuttle!”

Through the distant corridor’s glass windows, sleek, leaping alien bug forms could be seen racing toward the northern zone. With a deep sigh, Kraftmann waved to the five remaining soldiers and pressed the elevator switch.

“The launch silo is ready. The cluster electron beam generator is warming up. Launch countdown begins.”

“Ten, nine, eight, seven…”

The pale blue flames of the shuttle’s thrusters streaked across the sky, growing smaller and smaller. The base behind them gradually shrank into a tiny black dot, disappearing from view on the cockpit’s monitor.

What Kraftmann and the others didn’t know was that as the shuttle entered the vacuum of space, igniting its main engine and transforming into a flash of light heading toward outer space, the twenty-odd Zerglings rampaging through the base suddenly vanished without a trace, as though they had never existed.

“Tang Fang, Captain Joanna of the Archimedes is requesting communication.” Gazing out at the endless, profound starry expanse, Kraftmann steadied his emotions and gave the order.

Above the control console, a holographic star map materialized. Young Salton sat at the center, surrounded by six orbiting planets. As Kraftmann pressed a few keys, the camera zoomed in on the satellite orbit of Planet 5. Hovering near the orbital path of the Roberta 608 research satellite above the base was a spaceship about a hundred meters long.

The ship’s head was a flat disc shape, with a torpedo-like fuselage in the middle and a pair of bullet-shaped thrusters at the rear.

This was a Pioneer-class research vessel, capable of holding up to 600 crew members. Equipped with geological exploration tools, resource scanners, and space laboratories, it was one of the Monya Empire’s most advanced research vessels.

Since the establishment of the resource exploration base on Planet 5, it had remained docked in satellite orbit, collecting and analyzing data to assist in research.

Tang Fang’s initial reason for sneaking back into the base and unleashing the Zerglings for a surprise attack was simply to eliminate Wei Haitao, removing the thorn in his side. But as events unfolded, he decided to play along, pretending to save Kraftmann’s life.

Outside the base was a thunderstorm night, while inside, the Zerg wreaked havoc. Under such dire circumstances, the only way to survive was to board a shuttle and flee to the research vessel in outer space. Once aboard, Tang Fang could either steal a spacecraft to escape or remain within the military, biding his time and finding ways to strengthen himself. The choice was entirely his.

Static flickered across the communicator’s screen, and a woman in her early thirties, slightly plump, appeared before them.

“Captain Joanna, I must inform you of bad news. The forward base has fallen to an unknown alien attack.”

“Major Kraftmann, no need to explain further. I’m already aware and have prepared for containment.”

“Very well. We’ll discuss specifics after I board.”

“Understood. I still have some arrangements to handle. We’ll talk in detail when we meet.” With that, the communication ended.

At Kraftmann’s signal, Tang Fang adjusted the course, reducing the engine thrust as the shuttle slowly approached the research vessel in satellite orbit.

The shuttle glided silently through the dark void of space. The five lucky survivors leaned back in their seats, snoring softly. Kraftmann stared out the window, his brows furrowed, lost in thought.

Zhou Ai, Housen, and the others remained silent. Arroz fiddled with the last of his cheap cigars, debating whether to smoke it or save it for later.

Tang Fang handed over the controls to Byron in the co-pilot seat and turned his attention to the terran base interface in the system.

The Barracks had finished construction. Selecting it, he noticed that the icons for its auxiliary modules were already lit up. This meant that the Tech Lab and Reactor associated with the Barracks did not require additional research data to unlock—they could be upgraded immediately.

He quickly pressed the hotkey "X" to begin constructing the Barracks’ auxiliary building: the Tech Lab.

Twenty-five seconds later, the Tech Lab was complete. Selecting the Barracks again, three new combat units appeared in the production menu: Marines, Marauders, and Reapers.

Marines were equipped with powered armor, allowing them to operate in space and under NBC (nuclear/biological/chemical) conditions, as well as in various harsh environments. Their weapon was the C-14 "Impaler" Gauss rifle, capable of firing 8mm metal spikes at supersonic speeds.

Marauders, often called "Bald Guys," had stronger powered armor than Marines. Armed with K12 quad-barrel grenade launchers, they provided heavy firepower support when mixed with Marine squads.

Reapers, nicknamed "Deathbringers," were equipped with dual Gauss pistols and carried jetpacks on their backs, enabling them to leap onto cliffs, cross rivers, chasms, and other obstacles.

Marines cost 50 minerals to produce and take up 1 supply. Marauders cost 100 minerals and 25 gas to produce and take up 2 supplies.  Reapers cost 50 minerals and 50 gas to produce and also take up 1 supply.

Marines had the active ability "Stimpack," which increased attack and movement speed at the cost of health. However, Stimpack required separate research in the Tech Lab. They also possessed the passive ability "Combat Shield," which, when researched, granted them reinforced alloy shields to improve battlefield survivability.

Marauders had the same active ability "Stimpack" and a unique passive ability called "Concussive Shells," which slowed small and medium-sized enemy units. Both abilities required research in the Tech Lab.

Unlike Marines and Marauders, Reapers came with two passive abilities that required no additional research. One was "Jetpack," allowing them to use their back-mounted propulsion systems to scale cliffs and high ground easily. The other was "Combat Drugs," enabling them to heal themselves with fast-acting medicine when out of combat.

With three new combat units added to his arsenal, Tang Fang’s grin nearly split his face. The Queen and Spine Crawlers in the Zerg base were too slow-moving, suitable only for passive defense, while offense relied solely on Zerglings.

After upgrading "Metabolic Boost," the Zerglings’ mobility had greatly improved, far surpassing most land vehicles. However, their individual damage output was weak, and they couldn’t target air or long-range units. In the previous battle, if he hadn’t sneaked back into the base to launch a surprise attack from within but instead opted for a frontal assault, even doubling the number of Zerglings wouldn’t have been enough to take down the base’s defenses.

But now, with the addition of Terran units, his forces were diversified, and his tactics would become increasingly flexible.

As his excitement cooled, Tang Fang turned his attention to his mineral and gas reserves. After the battle, he had collected a total of 640 life energy points, bringing his total to 740.

During the fight, he had spent 150 points replenishing his Zergling numbers. Building the Barracks and Tech Lab had cost him a combined total of 350 minerals and 25 gas.

Now, he had 360 minerals and 515 gas left—a paltry sum that could produce only seven Marines. Moreover, his Zergling count had dropped from 38 to 28 after the fierce battle.

Finding more crystals to replenish his resources was now a pressing issue.
