Chapter 7: Injury
"The greater the ability, the greater the responsibility, right? At least you're made of metal, bulletproof," Jack said earnestly to Tapai.
"Oh fuck off," Tapai tightened the gun in its hand, forcefully kicked against the ground with his reverse-jointed legs, and charged straight towards the people behind them.
Bullets of various kinds from the front quickly caught up with Tapai's figure, ultimately leading to a furious volley of curses from the other side.
"Haha! Got them!" Jack, observing the crossfire between the two sides, suddenly clenched his fists in excitement.
"Pfft!" Jack's smile froze in place on his face.
Trembling, he looked down, witnessing a sharp blade covered in flesh and blood piercing through his abdomen. As the blade withdrew, hot blood instantly sprayed out.
Clutching his stomach, Jack turned around to look behind him, only to find no one there, just a blood-stained blade suspended in mid-air.
Under his gaze, a bald man with metallic prosthetic arms and an inverted cross branding on his neck sneered as he deactivated his camouflage, revealing himself. "Bastard."
"You son of a *****!" Jack roared, raising his rifle.
But in a flash of cold light, his rifle-holding arm was chopped into three pieces in an instant.
Time seemed to freeze in that moment as Jack watched the marrow spill from his broken bones. In that instant, he felt the immense despair from the huge difference between the cybernetics and flesh. "Am I going to die?"
The next moment, time resumed, intense gunfire erupted, bullets from the left preventing the bald man from advancing.
Glancing at Jack, who was covered in blood at that moment, the bald man sneered, swiftly activating the camouflage and disappearing from the spot.
Just as Jack was about to collapse, Tapai, holding a rifle, rushed back quickly, grabbing him and dragging him away from the ongoing battle.
Because of Tapai's efforts, both sides were fully engaged, momentarily ignoring them.
"Am I going to die?" The delayed pain finally arrived, causing Jack's consciousness to blur as he spoke intermittently.
Tapai quickly dragged Jack to a low-lying area without bullet threats. "Not yet."
Extending its hand, the fine fiber optic cable that previously hacked the computer swiftly entered Jack's body, rapidly stitching up the ruptured blood vessels at an incredible speed, reducing the blood loss.
But it wasn't enough; Jack was close to hemorrhagic shock by now.
Tapai quickly scanned Jack's blood type with a sensor and scanned the surroundings left and right. Retrieving a ragged corpse from outside, Tapai inserted the translucent fiber optic cable into its bloodstream. Gradually, the cable changed color from translucent to blood-red, while another end inserted itself into Jack's body.
"W-wait! I'm not dead yet!" The ragged corpse struggled to open his eyes.
Tapai raised its fist and struck the person's head forcefully, causing the person's skull to cave in. "You're dead now."
As the blood, still warm, rapidly entered Jack's body, his deathly pale face gradually regained color.
Tapai swiftly scanned the surroundings with the radar for anything useful, and found the pain-relief stimulant on the corpse. After administering it into Jack's body, he finally woke up.
As Jack opened his eyes again and saw the rainy gray sky, he cursed fiercely, "Fuck!"
At that moment, he felt extremely fortunate to have activated Tapai. Without this prehistoric robot, he might not have survived that last attack.
"Let's leave this place quickly. If we don't leave now, you won't be able to fuck anything anymore. I don't have any anti-infection medicine. Your wound has been exposed to acid rain. Without a doctor, you won't survive much longer," Tapai said, assisting Jack, preparing to leave.
"Wait." Jack, enduring the pain, looked at the head-crushed body on the ground.
This person also seemed to be a mercenary, with a sleek black cybernetic arm that looked highly technological. His clothes were riddled with bullet holes, presenting a miserable sight.
With a skull tattoo on his left cheek, messy dirty braids, and two large nose rings, he didn't look like a good person by any means.
Glancing at his empty right arm and then at the metallic cybernetic arm on the corpse, Jack asked, "Can you attach it to me?"
Thinking about the bald man who nearly took his life, Jack's anger didn't subside. He ended up like this was all because he didn't have cybernetics.
Jack wasn't just acting out of impulse. Who knows if the person who almost killed him might still be around, stealthily waiting nearby. At this moment, he needed to regain as much combat capability as possible.
"Having too many cybernetics can cause cyberpsychosis."
"Look at the situation around us. Is this the time to discuss this issue? Let's stay alive and get out of here first!" The gunfire all around made Jack disregard much of this; in this environment, there was little difference between having a broken arm and being useless.
"Alright, you're the boss." Tapai's fingers quickly transformed into tools, starting to dismantle the metallic right arm of the other person.
Utilizing the remaining effects of the painkillers, Tapai swiftly cut through flesh and bone, and soon, the matte black metallic arm was transplanted onto Jack.
As a tingling sensation traveled through the nerve endings, Jack realized his right hand could move again.
Moving the metallic arm in front of him, he slowly opened and closed the fingers, feeling like he had his hand back.
"Clang!" A blade covered in arcs sprang out from the forearm, reflecting Jack's excited expression on its edge.
The sound of 'click-click' echoed as the blade swiftly retracted. Five metallic fingers bent backward, close to the arm, while the pitch-black muzzle spiraled open from the palm.
This cybernetic limb could even house a firearm. Clearly, the nearby explosions were caused by this contraption.
Feeling the returning pain, Jack picked up a remaining dose of painkiller from the ground and injected it directly into his thigh. With his pupils shrinking, he felt a surge of light coursing through him.
"It looks like I struck gold." With restored mobility, Jack stored the last bit of the painkiller in his pocket, gritting his teeth as he stood up.
Instead of retreating immediately, he went to the spot where the two groups had clashed before, firing a few shots towards the group that had been chasing him.
Seeing the distant explosions, Jack finally felt that his injuries weren't as painful as before.
"Let's go!" Jack, leading Tapai, prepared to leave, but a trembling hand grabbed his left foot. "W-wait!"
Bending down, Jack saw the guy with a caved-in skull and a missing right arm, looking up at him. On closer inspection, wasn't this the original owner of his right arm?
