Chapter 2: Intelligence
At this moment, Jack Sun finally understood why there were doors on the ceiling and floor, and why all the walls were made of metal.
It was because those were not doors; they were airlocks. He realized that since he woke up, he had been walking horizontally on the walls!
Jack Sun, shaken for a while, leaned closer, sticking his face against the glass, trying to identify. Though it was gray, he was sure it was Earth.
However, things had changed. The once blue planet was now enveloped in a shroud of grey metallic debris, as if covered by a layer of grey gauze.
All that metallic debris—satellites, in various shapes and sizes—completely surrounded the entire planet. Some were so large that Jack Sun could barely make out their outlines with his naked eye.
"Why are there so many satellites... What year is this exactly?" Jack Sun was certain that with the technology he remembered, it was impossible to achieve this, even considering his lost five years of memory.
As Jack Sun's gaze shifted from Earth to the left, he froze. A silver-grey planetary ring encircled Earth like a belt, yet the moon, which should have been there, had vanished.
The majority of the planetary ring consisted of rocks, spaceships, and remnants of space stations. And Jack Sun realized he was currently within it.
At this moment, Jack Sun finally understood where he was since waking up—inside a large space station enveloped by a moon's planetary ring.
But immediately following this realization, a second question emerged: how could he get back?
Being in a space station in space, and with this station appearing half-derelict, returning from the space to the ground seemed impossible.
However, Jack Sun didn't need to solve this problem because the harsh reality had already resolved it for him.
The vibrations throughout the station intensified, and the screen behind him continued to flicker, even emanating some heat. Jack Sun was shocked to realize that his previous action seemed to have disrupted the equilibrium this place had maintained for so long.
Amidst these disturbances, Jack Sun witnessed a terrifying change outside the glass. The gyroscope-like space station beneath him was slowly drifting out from the planetary ring, tilting towards Earth's atmosphere.
A chill shot up his spine. "Shit!! This thing is going to crash straight down! I wanted to go back, but not like this!"
"What should I do? I have to do something!" Jack Sun, sweating profusely on his forehead, hurried to the flickering screen, finding that none of his actions were yielding any response. Swiftly, he floated towards other rooms.
Perhaps because Jack Sun had triggered something just now, some previously closed hatches began to open. With beads of sweat pouring down, Jack Sun scoured various space modules for any last glimpse of hope, whether it was an escape pod or anything else that could ensure his survival.
"Quick, quick, quick!" Jack Sun could feel the centrifugal force increasing as the space station tumbled, understanding that time was running out.
Cargo holds, exercise modules, and various compartments—all were discovered one by one by Jack Sun.
With a bang, Jack Sun forcefully pushed open a partially covered hatch, revealing a line of robots secured against the wall, ceiling, and floor.
These robots, aside from their backward-jointed iron hooves for feet and a screen as eyes, were mostly similar in structure to humans.
Jack Sun didn't have time to be astonished by their technological advancement; he just wanted to know if these robots knew where the escape pod was.
Seeing them gave Jack Sun a glimmer of hope. He swiftly unfastened the restraints and began searching for the switch on the robots.
Upon feeling around, as Jack Sun's fingers brushed over a screen under the robot's armpit, the display that served as the robot's eyes suddenly lit up, showing two simple eye icon graphics.
"Hey? Hey hey?! Can you hear me? Where's the escape pod? Where is it?!" Jack Sun grabbed the floating robot due to weightlessness, rapidly bombarding it with questions.
The robot responded immediately, “Kinesiska paketet% ....50% .....70% .....Chinese data package loaded."
"Hello, thank you for using Tapai Technology product. Please customize a name for this product."
"Are you kidding me?!"
"Name customization successful: Are you kidding me? Please select initial mode." Three options appeared on the robot's screen: Guardian mode, Assistant mode, Entertainment mode.
In a state of urgency, Jack Sun quickly selected Guardian mode. However, other various options kept popping up afterward. He never expected that using a new robot would require so many settings.
As the space station's tremors caused some parts of the modules to shake loose and float in the air, Jack Sun finally finished setting up.
"Hello, Jack Sun. Are you kidding me is happy to assist you." Two smiling eyes appeared on the robot's screen.
"Do you recognize this place? It's about to crash!! Do you know where the escape pod or any ship is?" Jack Sun's tone was urgent.
Surprisingly, the robot actually responded. "User-level red alert, automatic alarm initiated with full video and audio recording, activating emergency rescue... *Ding* Satellite positioning has no response, network connection failure, insufficient data for rescue.”
At that moment, terrifying metallic creaks echoed from outside, as if the entire space station was about to tear apart. The fear of death made Jack Sun's body involuntarily tremble.
Just as he was about to give up on the useless robot and find another way, the robot suddenly showed new activity.
"Link to unknown subnet 12.128.C1, https://otakutl.blogspot.com established. Data collection completed, rescue plan development failed, reason: insufficient logical thinking ability, unable to comprehend subnet data logic. Please grant ROOT permission authorization for activating AI logic system iteration based on subnet data. Agreeing will increase rescue probability by 32.3% after analysis."
"Agree! Agree!" Even though Jack Sun didn't quite understand what was being said, he understood that an increased chance of rescue was a good thing.
"System iteration begins..." A progress bar appeared on the robot's screen.
And at that moment, the entire compartment abruptly tore apart, a metal panel hurtling towards the robot's head like a slicing blade.
Jack Sun grabbed the robot's metallic arm and forcefully pulled it towards himself. However, in the weightlessness, as he pulled the robot, he ended up at the robot's position due to the conservation of momentum.
Seeing the metal panel about to impale his head, Jack forcefully kicked the robot, causing the metal panel to narrowly graze past his face.
Propelled by this force, Jack Sun slammed into the wall and finally came to a halt. Before he could catch his breath, a swiftly spinning nut flew toward his neck like a bullet.
Just as the nut was about to pierce Jack Sun's neck, an iron hand suddenly extended from the side. With a 'clang', sparks flew as the two collided, and the nut was knocked far away.
Looking along the metallic arm, Jack Sun realized that the robot he had just activated had used its metallic body to shield most of his left side.
The robot slowly raised its head, locking eyes with Jack Sun. "What the... What kind of ridiculous name is this?" The robot finally spoke.
