Chapter 18 Abnormalities (Part 2/3)

Jun Lixuan's expression sank into monolith black. His fingers on his side clenched into a fist, so tightly that whites showed on his knuckles. Ling Qiyang looked at him and did not say any more.

Jun Liyuan answered, "If they die, I must find out the cause as the General. In that case, I am prone to parasitic infection. If this thing is really directed at me, then the perpetrators really thought things out very clearly."

"Third Brother ..." Jun Lixuan naturally understood the other's purpose. But when Jun Liyuan stated it clearly in words, he still felt the molten rage boiling within his heart.

Jun Liyuan smiled, "No worries. Don't we have Qiyang here with us?"

"Third Brother, you don't have to worry. As long as no one gets close within one hour of their death, the parasites will naturally die if they can't find a new host. But I'm sorry, for those who have been infected, I am unable to do cure them." For most parasites, the lives of the host could be saved. But this parasite was an exception.

"You have tried your best. It is already challenging to find out the cause. Sometimes it is God's will, and we as men cannot violate it." Although the new squad was only temporarily under his charge, it was still painful to watch his men die to an unknown infection.

"Parasites are commonly raised close to where they are used. They are heavily reliant on human flesh for survival. If it leaves a human body for more than an hour, it will die. The most commonplace for raising parasites is the mass grave." Ling Qiyang had been taught of thee techniques by his Master in detail. Although he was not as proficient, he still knew a thing or two. "However, it is impossible to follow the parasite to find its master since they never ever return till their death."

"Anyway, it's good to know the truth. Now we can set up preventive measures." Jun Liyuan was very satisfied with the answer Ling Qiyang gave him.

Having said this, the group went to see the soldiers who were currently sober. They found the same symptoms. Ling Qiyang interrogated them and found where they had been in the past month and their close contacts. Following the soldiers’ memories, they found that these people had taken a New Year’s holiday during their breaks and had all been to a casino on the city's outskirts.

As gambling was explicitly forbidden for soldiers, they could only go to the suburbs. Alas, a casino attracted people from all walks of life, making it too difficult to pinpoint suspicious people. However, there was indeed a mass grave at the foot of the mountain in the city's outskirts. It was only half an hour away from the casino they visited.

"It seems that I have to go to the mass grave." Ling Qiyang said. "If the parasites are really raised there, it's better to cut the problems at its root." Raising this thing took a long time. Disposing of the existing ones could deal a severe blow to the Parasite Master and force him to stop for a while.

"I'll accompany Qiyang. Third Brother, after you have arranged the military affairs, go back and rest soon." Jun Lixuan could see the fatigue and stress in Jun Liyuan's eyes. Now that the cause of the problems had been unveiled, he most likely found some relief.

In the afternoon, Jun Lixuan took Ling Qiyang to the mass grave on the city's outskirts. Due to its remote location, the neighbourhood nearby was sparsely populated. This mass grave served as the final resting place for people in the lowest socio-economic class. They were homeless beggars, or prisoners who died in jail with no one to collect their bodies. There were also, though a small proportion of servants who committed a grave crime and were executed. These people were often carelessly wrapped in a straw mat and threw into the pit. Even at their final moments, no records of their names were left with them.

Fortunately, the chilly weather slowed the decomposition of the corpses. It also inhibited the sense of smell, making the pungent stench lingering in the air much more bearable. At the very least, Jun Lixuan and Ling Qiyang could hold back their overwhelming urge to puke.

Ling Qiyang took out a silver waist pendant containing black pills from the medicine box. It was intricately carved with elegant designs. He handed it to Jun Lixuan, and said, "Wait for me here. I will go down alone. This pendant can prevent you from catching the toxins and parasites."

Translator's Notes:

Omg, going into a mass grave sounds super, damn gross >< I can somehow imagine that rotting stench fuming my nostrils and being surrounded by corpses sounds horrific!!! Σ(゚Д゚;≡;゚д゚)
