Chapter 09 An Exposing Banquet (Part 2/3)
Ling
Qiyang was an Omega. Although he was married to Jun Lixuan, it was inappropriate
for him to sit with the women. So, he sat with Jun Lixuan. His position beside the princes amplified a much more profound message. First, it emphasized his status of the First Wife. Then, it demonstrated the
regard that the Emperor and Empress placed on him.
Soon,
the wine and dishes were served to the tables. Per customs, the Emperor said
some words of guidance and wishes, and everyone raised their cups and drank
with the Emperor. With that, the New Year’s Eve banquet officially begun. One
by one, the princes started to toast to the Emperor and Empress, beginning with Jun
Liyuan.
When it
was Jun Lixuan's turn, the Emperor looked at the amber liquor in his glass and
grinned, " My Xuan'er is a great drinker. Why are you drinking fruit wine
today?"
"Emperor
Father, the wines in the Palace are all superb, but Qiyang is not good with
alcohol, so he can only drink fruit wine. As his husband, we should drink
together as a pair. If I got drunk, Qiyang would need to take care of me, and I
would cause Emperor Father and Empress Mother to worry."
"Good!
My son is really filial." Emperor Yanxi burst into a hearty guffaw and
patted Jun Lixuan on the shoulder. He toasted with Jun Lixuan and Ling Qiyang. With a hearty gulp, he emptied his cup. Then smiled at Empress, "The sons you raised are terrific.
Excellent!"
The Empress
followed up with a toast, "Xuan'er has always been very down to earth, but
not as meticulous. Now he has really matured, knowing to consider the positions
of his parents and wife."
"Indeed."
Emperor Yanxi smiled happily.
Jun
Lixuan and Ling Qiyang returned to their seats. Other than Jun Liyuan and Jun
Liche, everyone else had sullen and sour faces. Emperor Yanxi praised Empress's
sons, sowing inevitable discord amongst the harem. Amongst the princes,
jealousy blazed like wildfire. However, they didn't dare to overexpose these emotions. If
Emperor Yanxi noticed them, they would not be able to get away scot-free.
Amid the bustling celebration, three rounds of drinking passed. On the women's side on the hall, the Imperial Noble Consort was already drunk and
fell back on her chair. Like exquisite silver bells, her light chuckles
attracted the Emperor's attention.
"Why
is my beloved concubine smiling so happily?" Emperor Yanxi asked.
"It's
nothing. The invigorating joy from the hall's decorations reminded me of a
wedding hall.” The Imperial Noble Consort stood up straight and looked at
Empress, saying, "Alas, the lilies sticking around is making it
inevitably a bit tacky. Besides, lilies are not known to be exquisite or elegant amongst
flowers. For it to be used at a royal palace banquet seems a little
self-deprecating. What do you think, Her Majesty?"
Once
the hall heard Imperial Noble Consort's snobbsih remark, the atmosphere froze
awkwardly. Jun Liyuan frowned slightly. While he wished to defend the Empress,
he could not argue with the ladies due to his status as Prince. Jun Lixuan bit onto his lower lip as his eyes squinted. As he had
expected, today's banquet would not be peaceful. Jun Liche put the wine glass
against his lips, and a little disdain flashed in his eyes. No matter how
Empress Mother arranged the banquet, they all knew she would be faulted by
others.
The
Empress smiled but did not answer. The Palace had installed a new floor heating
greenhouse last year. It was built to plant some flowers that are easy to grow
in the winter and add some joyous spirit to the palaces. In addition to pink
and white, orange lilies were also planted this year. When the three colours
were matched, the scene was picturesque.
"Lilies
uphold themselves with an elegant posture and release a sweet aroma. It also
has a noble meaning with a warm and cheerful colour. I think that it is perfect
as a decoration for today's banquet." Sensing the suffocating atmosphere,
Ling Qiyang's voice was like a breath of fresh air. "With the drinking today, many would
inevitably be a little tipsy. The lilies can aid in clearing and calming the
mind. This can prevent inappropriate actions and choices of words, which would
otherwise break the rules."
The
unexpectedly respectful spite left the Imperial Noble Consort's mouth slightly
gaping, unable to find words in response. Emperor
Yanxi nodded in agreement, " Qiyang makes sense. This is Qiyang's first
New Year celebration in the Palace. Is it food to your liking?"
"Yes,
Emperor Father. I have never seen these dishes. They are very novel and taste
delicious." In reality, even if they were not to his liking, Ling Qiyang
had to praise them the same way.
"That's
good, eat more." Emperor Yanxi was obviously in a good mood and said to
Jun Lixuan, "Take good care of your wife."
"Yes."
Jun Lixuan replied.

coldly, "Well, it's expected that you are not accustomed to the good
